    Description

    First Edition, Very Scarce

    Three volumes of the musical scores of Scots songs, bound in one.

    Present here are:

    Later circa 1770 copies of volumes I ('Thirty Scots Songs: For a Voice & Harpsichord') and volume II ('A Second Set of Scots Songs for a Voice & Harpsichord') of the collections of Scots songs collected by Robert Bremner.

    The engraved scores are interleaved with letterpress pages of the words of the songs.

    Identified as a later edition via the statement 'Adapted by Robert Bremner'.

    Volume I lacks the title page, and lacking also the two leaves of score for the first song 'Katharine Ogie Blathrie'. With contemporary annotations regarding the song to the verso of the first leaf present.

    Also present is the vanishingly scarce 1782 first edition of Neil Stewart's 'A Collection of Scots Congs: Adapted for a Voice & Harpsichord'.

    Once again, the engraved scores are interleaved with letterpress pages of the words of the songs.

    ESTC T186805. Priced "Price 2sh. 6b." as called for.

    These three volumes offer wonderful insight into the popular Scots songs of the late eighteenth century.

    Condition

    In the publisher's original cloth binding. Fading to back strip and board heads. Small ink mark to back strip. A touch of fraying to back strip head and tail. Hinges lightly strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Title page and following two music leaves of volume I lacking, with head and tail of following letterpress leaf removed. Small tape restorations to fore edge of three leaves of volume I. Major restoration of first text leaf of volume II, obscuring some text. Pages significantly age toned. Major handling marks throughout, most concentrated to volumes I and II, but still apparent to volume III. Inscriptions to verso of first leaf of volume I.
