What Our Customers Say...

Description

Very Scarce

Very scarce, with only two institutional copies found.

A Latin treatise on Saint Emmeram's Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded c739 at Regensburg, Bavaria. Comprising three parts in one, all dated 1755: 'De Exemptione et Libertate'; 'De Ortu at Libertate', and 'Illustratio pro Commodo R. O. Marci Hansizii S. J. Veritatem de Prima Ecclesia Cathedrali Ratisbonensi'.

"Dissertatio altera novo et inaudito" to the first title page.

Bound in contemporary full vellum, with working metal hinge attachments.

With a folding engraved frontispiece, showing a plan of the monastery, illustrated with its Saints.

A copy held by the National Library of Scotland credits this work to Joannes Baptista, who was the Prince-Abbot of the monastery at the time of publication. However, "Quod R. D. P. Hansiz Soc. Jes" to the title pages suggests this also to be the work of Markus Hansiz (1683-1766), a Jesuit historian who dedicated his studies to the Dioceses of Ratisbon, Vienna, Neustadt, Seckau, Gurk and Lavant, all of which was to go towards executing a comprehensive "Germania Sacra".

Collated, register runs as: )(4, A-Q4, R3, A-Qq4, Rr1, A-Y4. Catch words confirm signatures running as issued, complete.

Condition

Bound in contemporary full vellum, with working metal hinge attachments. Externally, with significant discolouration and marks to the vellum. Slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine title. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spots and toning to the leaves. With a couple contemporary ink inscriptions to the title page.
