    Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, engraved title page, letterpress title page, and with twelve engraved plates - one for each book - engraved by Francis Hayman. Collated, complete.

    An excellent single volume edition of Milton's epic, focusing on the disobedience of Adam and Eve in Eden, and depicting Satan's expulsion from heaven.

    'The Life of Milton' to the start of the work is by Elijah Fenton.

    With a forty-six page index to the rear.

    Rebacked in morocco, retaining the contemporary calf boards, and with endpapers renewed. Bookplate of Clement Peele to front pastedown.

    A beautifully illustrated copy of Milton's work, which resulted in Blake terming Milton as being "of the Devil's party without knowing it" due to his charismatic depiction of Lucifer.

    Condition

    Rebacked in morocco, retaining the original calf covered boards, and with endpapers renewed. Bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to recto of frontispiece. Offsetting from tape to letterpress title page, tail of leaf A2, and verso of final leaf. Pages age toned due to paper type, with significant spotting and handling marks throughout.
