What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Original Binding, Very Scarce

Volume one only. Fourteen plates including frontis, ten of which are folding. Benjamin Baddam (c1693–1740) was a printer and compiler of the Memoirs of the Royal Society. He compiled an abridgement of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions. It was printed for him between 1738 and 1744 by Godfrey Smith in ten volumes, with 131 folding plates drawn by G. Smith and engraved by James Hulett, under the title Memoirs of the Royal Society, being a new abridgment of the Philosophical Transactions for the years 1665 to 1735. Previous abridgements of the Philosophical Transactions had been carried out on a piecemeal basis, whereas Baddam's version provided continuity and uniformity for the first time.

Condition

The boards are missing. The text block is firm. Internally the pages are generally clean, with slight browning. There is some very mild spotting, which is mostly limited to the first and last couple of pages. There is the occasional handling mark. The back endpaper is chipped. Overall the condition is fair due to the need for rebinding, otherwise good.
