A sammelband of five plays by Nicholas Rowe bound in one.
Rowe was a noted dramatist, and is generally considered to be the first editor of the works of Shakespeare.
He started his dramatic career in 1700 with the publication and production of 'The Ambitious Stepmother', produced at Lincoln's Inn Fields. His dramatic career flourished over the next two decades before his death in 1718.
This volume contains: 'Tamerlane', 'The Fair Penitent', 'Ulysses', 'The Tragedy of Jane Shore', and 'The Royal Convert'.
Illustrated with a frontispiece to 'The Fair Penitent', 'Ulysses', 'The Tragedy of Jane Shore', and 'The Royal Convert'. Bound without the frontispiece to 'Tamerlane'.

Condition
In a full calf binding, rebacked with the original front board restored. Externally, generally smart, a little rubbed with minor marks. Bumping to the extremities of the front board, with a small amount of loss. Tear to the front joint. Hinges are starting but firm. Front endpaper is detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with scattered spot. Final leaf of 'The Royal Convert' is tipped-in to the rear paste down, with edge wear and chips. Title page of 'Tamerlane' is working loose.
