First Edition
Present here are first editions of Epistles III and IV of this work.
The first edition of Epistle III, published in 1733, is Griffith issue Q 308, ESTC T5600. With 316 lines, misnumbered as 323, with page 20 tail piece showing man with bow and arrows, and the open book ornament to the title page.
Signatures running A2, B-E2. Lacking leaf A1, the half title.
The 1734 first edition of Epistle IV is Griffith 331, ESTC T5604. Page 17 misnumbered 71, advertisement to F2 recto, and 386 lines misnumbered as 393.
Signatures running [A2], B-F2. Collated, complete.
Voltaire termed this work "the most beautiful, the most useful, the most sublime didactic poem ever written in any language", but later recanted and wrote 'Candide' as a satire of the philosophy displayed in this poem.
Dedicated to Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, Pope's aim in this work was to 'vindicate the ways of God to man'.
Condition
Unbound, as issued. Minor closed tear to head of Epistle III title page, with light spotting to title page centre, and with handling marks to verso of final leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Epistle III leaves age toned due to paper type, with spotting to page perimeters. Epistle IV leaves clean and bright, with title page just a touch age toned to perimeters.
