First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first edition of John Dart's detailed architectural and historical study of one of England's most significant ecclesiastical sites.

Illustrated with nine plates of coats of arms of the subscribers, four folding plates, thirty-six full page plates, and further vignette engravings, all by James Cole.

Collated, complete.

The work traces the cathedral's foundation, construction, and alterations, accompanied by engraved views, monuments, and epitaphs. 

ESTC T70902, with 18 armorial devices and 43 names to page IX, as called for.

Rebacked, in a full calf binding, with endpapers renewed. 

With the bookplate of the Right Honourable Viscount Montague to the front pastedown, this is likely the bookplate of Mark Browne, 9th Viscount Montague, the last holder of the title.

Dart provides biographical notices of archbishops and notable figures connected with the church, as well as accounts of the monastic buildings and their dissolution.

Condition

Rebacked, in a fill calf binding, with endpapers renewed. Externally, excellent. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright and generally clean, with the odd spot to page perimeters.
