What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding
In the original Latin.
Complete in two volumes.
The first edition of the poetry of George Buchanan to be edited by Scottish classical scholar Thomas Ruddiman, with additional notes and commentary.
Buchanan was a Scottish historian and humanist scholar, termed by historian Keith Brown as "the most profound intellectual sixteenth century Scotland produced."
Edited with scholarly rigour, Ruddiman's edition aimed to establish a definitive Latin text based on the best available manuscripts of Buchanan's works.
Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece to volume I.
ESTC No: T144415
With the bookplate of the General Theological Seminary of New York to front and rear paste downs, and with their stamp to front blank and title page of each volume.
Ruddiman's royalist sympathies notably coloured his editorial commentary, especially in response to Buchanan’s republican views.
