What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Leather Binding

An early edition of this work, published in the same year as the first edition, but with the two errors to the title page corrected.

Herny Sachervell was a High Church Anglican clergyman who preached an incendiary 5 November sermon and gained nationwide fame.

As a result, he was impeached by the House of Commons and found guilty. The trial lasted from 27 February to 21 March 1710, but received a light punishment which was seen as a vindication.

This work details the trial, and has four related short works bound to the rear, as was often the case with this work.

The first of these is the scarce first edition of the Bishop of Oxford's 1710 speech upon the first article of impeachment. Identified with the final line of the second paragraph on p. 11 reading "ted, and so zealously press'd at this time." and the catchword "There" on p. 3.

The 1710 work 'The Bishop of Salisbury's and the Bishop of Oxford's Speeches' on the first article of impeachment.

The 1710 work 'The Bishop of Lincoln's and Bishop of Norwich's Speeches in the House of Lords, March the 17th At the Opening of the Second Article of the Impeachment Against Dr. Sacheverell'. The Bishop of Norwich's speech has an individual title page.

With the inscription of Geoffrey Carnell to the head of a front blank, and a former owner's inscription to the head of leaves A3 and A4.
