Description

Early Edition, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Scarce

Two works by John Evelyn bound in one.

The second title, 'Acetaria', is scarce.

Evelyn was an eminent landower, gardener, and courtier of the seventeenth century. He is best known today for his important diary, which spanned from 1640 to 1706.

'Kalendarium Hortense: or, the Gardner's Almanac, Directing what he is to do Monthly throughout the Years and what Fruit and Flowers Are in Prime'. The tenth edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece. This is a gardener's guide to the year, and had previously been published in one of Evelyn's best known works, 'Sylva'.

'Acetaria. A Discourse of Sallets'. The second edition. With a folding table. This is a curious treatise on salads and vegetarianism, and is considered to be the first book on salas.

'Westbury' bookplate to the front paste down. This is the bookplate of Richard Morland Tollemache Bethell, 4th Baron Westbury, who co-authored a book on Italian cookery called 'With Gusto and Relish'.
