What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Uncommon

The first edition.

Rebound in a hardback library binding, with renewed endpapers.

Written by English novelist, journalist and spy, Daniel Defoe, who claimed to write the majority of this work while in prison. Defoe did not wish to publish the completed parts of this text before his arrest in 1703 as he worried it would bring negative attention from the courts and his punishment would be more severe.

'Jure Divino' explores the historical origins of the monarchy and the government, presenting Defoe's views on power in society. Written in twelve books, each with their own pagination.

A popular work, this text was immediately pirated by a former printer of Defoe.

Illustrated with a frontispiece. Collated, complete.

As with other copies, although page numbers 11-13 are omitted in Book III, the text is complete.

With the occasional library stamp of Hereford Public Library.
