Description
Early Edition, First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding
Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon was a notable English historian and statesman, and grandfather of two English monarchs, Mary II and Queen Anne. He is best known for this work, his 'History of the Rebellion' first published between the years 1702–1704, but written between the years 1646 and 1648 (recording events up until March 1644). This text is often considered as being the first full-scale, detailed history of the Civil War, and is also important due to the role Clarendon himself played in the events detailed in the work. Moreover, Clarendon's involvement in the action invariably influenced his account, with the work being written from a royalist perspective, hence advancing Clarendon's own viewpoint and politics. Indeed, the work was even involved in the publishing war between supporters of the rival Roundheads and Cavaliers. Complete in three volumes, bound in six. Featuring a portrait frontispiece of Edward, Earl of Clarendon to each volume. A mixed edition set with: Volume I, Part 1 published in 1705 Volume I, Part 2 published in 1705 Volume II, Part 1 published in 1712 Volume II, Part 2 published in 1706 Volume III, Part 1 published in 1706 Volume III, Part 2 published in 1706 Volumes I, Part 1 and 2, Volume II part 2, and volume III part 1 and 2 are first octavo editions, with volume II part 1 being a later edition, Featuring a bookplate of a 'Richard Lister Venables' to the front pastedown of all volumes, except volume III part 2, which features a bookplate of a 'Charles Cornewall'.
