A very scarce complete three volume edition of the works of Francisco de Quevedo, a 'nueva impression corregida y ilustrada con muchas estampas muy donosas y apropiadas a la materia'.
Illustrated with an engraved title page to volume I, alongside twelve plates to volume I, four to volume II, and nine to volume III.
Collated, lacking one plate to volume II.
With the register: *4, A-3Y4; [2], A-3N4; [2], A-4F4, 4G2. Collated, complete.
With the inscription of Sir Thornbrough, 1735, to each front pastedown.
Quevedo was a Spanish nobleman, and one of the most prominent Spanish poets of the age. He was an adherent of the style known as conceptismo, characterized by a rapid rhythm, directness, simple vocabulary, witty metaphors, and wordplay.
Condition
In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips. Lacking two spine labels. Back strips age toned, with small losses of calf to back strip head and tail. Front board of volume II and III detached but present. Front board of volume I very tenderly held. Rear joint of volumes I and II starting, with board firmly held. Rear board of volume III somewhat tender. Inscriptions to front pastedown of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Lacking one plate to volume II.
