Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

The vanishingly scarce first edition. The last record of this first edition appearing at auction was in 1907.

A comical volume of one hundred and twenty nine letters penned by the author, Charles Gildon, purporting to be the letters stolen from a post boy one day and published for the world to see. The letters showcase fictionalised scandals and personal insights into lives behind doors in the late seventeenth century, with directions to the towns, street addresses, or coffee houses where the letters were to be left.

This work is an adaptation of Ferrante Pallavicino's 1641 'Il Corriero Svaligiato'.

Register runs as: A6, B-R12, S10. Collated, bound without leaves S11 and S12, and gathering T, which comprised of 6 leaves, being six leaves of the contents, and two leaves of adverts.

Gildon was a hack writer who was an enemy of Jonathan Swift, and was the target in Alexander Pope's 'Dunciad' and 'Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot'.
