What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

The first English translation of the work.

Vanishingly scarce, in any early edition.

Register runs A8-Z8, Aa8-Tt4.

Bound in full calf, with the boards rebacked and the endpapers renewed.

Written by French Protestant leader, Pierre Jurieu during the late seventeenth century, at a time when there was much religious unrest in France and surrounding European countries. Following the French Wars of Religion, the Protestants living in France were gradually stripped of the political and military powers, and experienced an increased pressure to convert to Catholicism.

In this work, Jurieu reveals the "unexpressible cruelties" from the Papists in the name of conversion.

First published in Rotterdam in 1686-7. Despite being banned in France at the time, this work found its way into the country, forming a deep impression on the Protestant population.

With a brief account of the Hungarian persecution.

Jurieu wrote a number of controversial works during his life, though he also did much to help those who suffered by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
