Maimbourg was a French Jesuit, who is well known for his 1675 'Histoire des Croisades', in which is regarded to be the first use of the term "crusade".

First published in French, this faithful translation to English was done by Dryden under the request of Charles II. Dryden was England's first Poet Laureate, an eminent poet, critic, translator, and playwright, who dominated the literary scene of Restoration England.
