Two volumes bound into one volume, containing; 'The Government of the Tongue', and 'The Art of Contentment'. 

Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece to 'Contentment', lacking the frontispiece to 'Tongue'. 

Two instructional Christian works from Richard Allestree, the provost of Eton College from 1665. 'The Government of the Tongue' discusses how to restrain and correctly use the gift of speech to be in keeping with Christian morals, with chapters on the evils of lying, derision, and obscene talk, and on boasting, flattery and positiveness. 'The Art of Contentment' covers the search for happiness, and how the teachings of God can lead to contentment. 

The register for 'The Government of the Tongue' runs as; A-A4, b-b4, A-Z4, Aa-Ee4. Collated, complete, skipping w-w4 but not lacking as is usual with this work, with catch words and paginations matching up. The register for 'The Art of Contentment' runs as; [preface unnumbered], A-Z4, Aa- Cc4. Collated, complete, skipping w-w4 but not lacking as is usual with this work, with catch words and paginations matching up. 

Bound in full contemporary calf.

Condition

Bound in full contemporary calf. Externally, cracking to the spine, with joints starting, light rubbing to the extremities and joints and slight marks to the boards. Owner's ink inscriptions to the endpapers. Internally title page starting, lacking frontispiece to 'Tongue', otherwise firmly bound, with generally bright and clean pages with the odd spot, and owner's signatures to the title page.
