First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

The very scarce first edition of John Owen's two volume commentary on the biblical 'Epistle to the Hebrews'.

With both volumes bound together, with volume I covering the first two chapters, and volume II covering the third, fourth and fifth chapters.

The first volume, published in 1668:

The text and register are continuous, despite the pagination. "An exposition of the two first chapters of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle unto the Hebrews" has separate dated title page (on 2S4r) and pagination; register is continuous.

With the register [1], A2, a4, B-4H4, 4I6. Collated, complete.

The second volume, published in 1674, on the 'third, fourth, and fifth chapters of the said epistle to the Hebrews'.

Owen, a leading Puritan theologian and scholar, uses a wide range of sources - including early Church writers, other theologians of his time, and biblical languages - to support his arguments surrounding the biblical 'Epistle to the Hebrews'.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Rear board detached, but present. Major loss of calf to back strip head. Further loss to back strip tail. Front joint starting, with board somewhat tenderly held. Internally, generally firmly bound. First gathering, including title page, working loose. First title page trimmed to perimeters and laid down, with losses to head and fore edge of first title page, not affecting text. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, with the odd spot and handling mark throughout. Second title page to volume I trimmed to perimeters and laid down.
