The first edition in English of this vanishingly scarce work. The last record of this work at auction was in 1917.
Title page is misbound to the rear.
'A Relation of the Country of Jansenia' is a satirical work on Jansenism, a Catholic theological movement which emphasised Augustinian theology. This work pokes fun at those in the movement, which was active in France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
By Lewis Fountaine, the pseudonym of Zacharias of Lisieux, this is his best known work.
Bound without the folding map.
Register runs as: A2-A8, B-G8, H7, A1.
Condition
In a full calf binding. Externally, a little rubbed and worn, with small patches of loss to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Small tear to the head of the front joint. Hinges are starting but firm. Lacking the front endpaper, loss to the rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean, with scattered spots and handling marks. Minor edge wear to the first and last few pages, chip to leaf F7. Bound without the folding map.
