    The scarce first English language translation of this important work, translated from the original German by Henry Bell.

    Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece.

    An English language edition of a collection of Martin Luther's sayings around the dinner table, based on notes taken by various students of Luther between 1531 and 1546. It was compiled by Johannes Mathesius, J. Aurifaber, V. Dietrich, Ernst Kroker, and several others, and first published at Eisleben in 1566.

    With the register: [pi]1, A⁴, a4, B-3A6, 3B5. Lacking only leaf 3B6, the final blank.

    Former owner's inscription offering notes on the work to the front pastedown, and a newspaper clipping to the front free endpaper.

    A wonderful example of this scarce first English language edition of an important work.

    Condition

    Rebound in calf with blind tooling, and with endpapers renewed. Light rubbing to board perimeters and back strip tail, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Former owner's note pasted to front pastedown, and newspaper clipping to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece laid down, with minor losses to perimeters. Faint inscription to title page head. Title page age toned with significant handling marks. Pages otherwise lightly age toned, with the odd spot and handling mark. Pencil notations throughout. Light tide marks to head of first three gatherings, and final four gatherings. Lacking terminal blank.
