The first edition of this popular and oft-reprinted work.

A scholarly study on the antiquities of Athens, describing the glory of the city, it's established government and the towns within its territories, it's native people and their religion, and more.

The author, Francis Rous, considered the study of Ancient Greece as essential to understanding the modern world. He was one of the first authors in England to dedicate a whole work to the ancient state of Athens. Rous was the song of an Puritan and Member of Parliament of the same year.

With woodcut head- and tail-pieces.

Register runs as *4, A-S4, T3.

Collated, bound without the final blank, leaf T4.

Condition

In a modern calf binding, with renewed endpapers. Externally, generally smart, with marks to the boards. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the occasional scattered spot. Faint tidemark to the fore edge of a few pages, and minor edge wear to the text. Small patch of worming from the title page to page 12, with no loss of text. Pages 5-6 and 43-46 are trimmed to the margins.
