Early Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The second edition, with the following issue points: p51, the word Laches is printed in black; running title of the second and third comedies is spelled EVNVCHVS and HEAVTONTIMOR; the final fleuron represents the head of Medusa. Issue points are as stated in Alphonse Willems' 'Les Elzevier: histoire et annales typographiques'.

Illustrated with an engraved title, and head- and tail-pieces.

A volume of the six surviving classical comedies of Terence, including 'Andria', 'Heauton Timorumenos', 'Eunuchus', 'Phormio', 'Hecyra', and 'Adelphoe'. Terence was a Roman African playwright active during the Roman Republic, originally being brought to Rome as a slave before being freed due to his impressive literary abilities. His plays were incredibly important, used in the teaching of the Latin language during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Published by the family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers, Elzevir. Their books, in particular their series of duodecimo 'Elzevirs', have become famous and desirable amongst booksellers. This collection of Terence's plays is one of their most sought after publications.

Condition

In the original vellum binding. Externally, generally smart. Vellum is a little discoloured, as is usual to see. Marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Ink to the spine. Lacking paper to the front paste down. Edge wear to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean, with a few scattered spots and handling marks. Edge wear to the title page and first leaf of the dedication. Faint tidemark to the first and final few pages.
