What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Very Scarce

In the original Italian.

The very scarce first edition of this work, very scarce in all editions. The first edition of 1605 was published simultaneously by four different publishers, in both Venice and Brescia. This is the Francesco Tebaldino edition.

Described by scholars as 'the most comprehensive and original treatise on angelic beings ever written in early modern Europe', and as 'the most systematic taxonomy of the demonic presences inhabiting the creation'.

Cigogna combines theories on god, the origin of the world and pagan, Christian, Hermetic and Cabalistic ideas in order to describe the nature of angels, and the hierarchy of demonic beings.

The work is supplemented with a wealth of anecdotes, some recounted to the author by the archpriest of Barbarano, who personally had experienced supernatural happenings.

With a bookseller's label to front pastedown.

*-2*8, 3*4, A-2Q8

Collated, complete.

A very scarce and highly influential work; one of the supernatural anecdotes in this volume inspired a poem by the English Gothic novelist Matthew Lewis, author of 'The Monk'.

The work was approved of by the Spanish Inquisition upon publication.
