What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Leather Binding, Scarce
The third and most important edition of this scarce work.
First published in 1574 as 'Dictionarium Teutonico-Latinum', this third edition was vastly expanded, and is the final edition to be personally edited by the author.
This is a greatly significant work, being the first Dutch-Latin dictionary ever published, and remained the standard reference for the subject until the end of the eighteenth century.
The author, Cornelis Kiliaan, was the most important lexicographer of the Dutch language during the sixteenth century, and is considered to be the father of modern Dutch lexicography. Not only was this work important for its sheer contents, but it was innovative as Kiliaan indicated forms close to other related languages, and indicated a number of words in the region in which they were used. By the time he expanded the second edition in 1588, Kiliaan did not only use other dictionaries as a source, but also delved into other published works of varying genres, meaning that his dictionary was as complete as it could be,
