    The collected works of Virgil, printed in the original Latin.

    Vanishingly scarce, with only one copy held institutionally. 

    With notes from Philippi Melanchthonis, or Philip Melanchthon, a German theologian and Lutheran reformer.

    Virgil is one of the best remembered Ancient Roman poets, active during the Augustan period. Across his career he composed three of the most famous poems in the canon of Latin literature, 'Eclogues', 'Georgics', and 'Aeneid'.

    Virgil's works have had a great and far-reaching influence on Western literature, with his 'Aeneid' being considered the national epic of Ancient Rome.

    Signature runs a8-z8, A8-Q7, with 'Finis' to the final leaf. 

    Bound in full paneled calf. Endpapers renewed. 

    With sympathetic restoration to the first few pages, including title page.

    Condition

    Bound in full paneled calf. Endpapers renewed, blanks discarded. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd light mark. Endpapers and blanks retained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have been washed, with age toning and a few marks concentrated to the first and last few pages. Sympathetic restoration to the first few pages, repairing some loss to the title page tail. The odd chip to a few pages, not affecting text. Closely trimmed with very occasional loss to marginalia.
